Irish Research Council announce programme of events for Culture Night 2017

The invisible world of textiles, an examination of how bodily sounds are portrayed on screen, and an exploration of martial arts music will form just part of the exciting line-up of the Irish Research Council’s 2017 Culture Night programme.
Culture Night takes place nationwide on Friday, 22 September, from 5pm to 10pm, and for a second year in a row the Irish Research Council is offering a jam-packed schedule of activities in the historic surrounds of Boston College on Dublin’s St. Stephen’s Green.
The Irish Research Council’s 2017 Culture Night programme will build on the success of last year’s, which saw over 400 people in attendance.
This year, there will be a showcase of performances, demonstrations and interactive talks led by Council-funded researchers. The full schedule is detailed below:

5:45pm MARBLE MANIA Christine Casey and Patrick Wyse Jackson will uncover the nature and beauty of coloured stone in Dublin's Victorian architecture. | 6pm MARTIAL ARTS MUSIC Colin McGuire will use photos, video, and demonstration to explore the intersection of drumming, kung fu and the lion dance in a Canadian Chinatown. | 5:45pm TWO TRUTHS: PRESENCE, PERFORMANCE, PLAY Sarah Hoover will discuss affective co-presence in participatory performance with a playful take on Irish politics. |

7:15pm A STORY OF FIRE Brendan O’Neill will tell the story of early medieval Irish crafts through six objects. | 7:30pm THE CENTRE OF EVERYTHING Donal Fullam will demonstrate the interactive nature of music in video games and discuss the history of algorithmic music — from Mozart to Mario. | 7:15pm WOMEN AND NEW HOLLYWOOD Aaron Hunter will present video clips and archival material to discuss Polly Platt’s contribution to 1970s Hollywood style and why her work is still marginalised. |
8pm FERDINAND THE BULL Diane Daly will perform this beautiful story and discuss her research which focuses on storytelling in classical music performance. | 8:15pm EN-GENDERING NEITHER Francesca Placanica and Shane Byrne will describe multimedia processes leading to the making of the short-film Neither (I nor Not I), based on Feldman’s and Beckett’s one-woman opera Neither. |

Switch on Culture Night with venues and public spaces across the island of Ireland as they open their doors to host a programme of free late-night entertainment, as part of an all-island celebration of arts, heritage and culture. Now in its thirteenth year, Culture Night returns in 2017 with its biggest programme to date.
