HERA to fund 150 humanities research centres

Posted: 5 June, 2013

The HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) network has commenced negotiations with 18 international project consortiums from across Europe. These groups will bring together networks of researchers into 150 research centres.

The HERA partnership consisting of 19 European research funding organisations from 18 countries along with the European Commission have created a fund of over €18.5 million, under the successful collaboration of the HERA network. This inclusive joint research programme will fund new, innovative and exciting humanities-centred projects under the theme of Cultural Encounters. Each of the 18 projects will involve researchers from three or more participating countries.

The HERA Network launched its second Joint Research Programme under the theme of Cultural Encounters in early 2012. Successful projects have now been invited to negotiate funding awards, which will commence in autumn 2013.

Humanities funding research agencies from across Europe have committed to the HERA Cultural Encounters joint research programme. These include Austria (FWF), Belgium (F.R.S. – FNRS), Belgium (FWO), Croatia (HAZU), Denmark (DASTI), Estonia (ETF), Finland (AKA), Germany (BMBF via PT-DLR), Iceland (RANNĺS), Ireland (IRC), Lithuania (LMT), Luxembourg (FNR), Netherlands (NWO), Norway (RCN), Poland (NCN), Portugal (FCT), Slovenia (MIZS), Sweden (VR) and the United Kingdom (AHRC).

The European Commission is providing top-up funding via an ERANET Plus grant to the HERA initiative.
The Irish Research Council acts as the handling agency for the programme’s management. The European Science Foundation (ESF) managed the application and selection process.

The programme will officially launch the selected projects on 30th September 2013 in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
