President hosts reception for women in science at Áras an Uachtaráin

President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina held a reception to celebrate Women in Science at Áras an Uachtaráin on Sunday 31 January. The event celebrated the leading role that women are playing in science across all levels of education and the public sector. Irish Research Council-supported early stage career researchers attended the event as honoured guests.

“Science is an important and influential discipline – one which has a pivotal role to play in the great concerns of humanity in our time, and one which has the potential to make the greatest contribution to improving our world,” said President Higgins.

“As experts in their fields, award winners, holders of distinguished Chairs and Professorships, esteemed researchers, writers and lecturers they are breaking new ground and paving the way for new generations of women who will also wish to use their talent and creativity to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths, and play their unique role in crafting a better world,” he continued.

Invited guests from the Irish Research Council who attended the event included: Professor Eithne McCabe (Irish Research Council), Dr Shalini Singh (University of Limerick), Lara Cassidy (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Eucharia Meehan (Director, Irish Research Council), Professor Jane Ohlmeyer (Chair, Irish Research Council), Dr Aideen Ryan (NUI Galway), Dr Jessica Hayes (NUI Galway), Dr Alice Coughlan (Irish Research Council) and Dr Elaine O’Sullivan (University College Cork).
