The Irish Research Council is delighted to announce that Professor Daniel Bradley of Trinity College Dublin has secured over €200,000 in funding under HERA’s (Humanities in the European Research Area) prestigious international research programme, ‘Uses of the Past’.
Professor Bradley will join a team of academics from Iceland, Denmark and the UK to investigate the uses of genomic data in the study of human population histories. The project entitled ‘Identity, citizenship, and nationhood in the post-genome era (CITIGEN)’ encourages humanities and natural sciences researchers to collaborate to develop integrated approaches to understand the past.
Speaking about his work, Professor Bradley said: “This project is an excellent opportunity to integrate different perspectives on how the fast emerging field of genomics is impacting on public understandings of the past.”
The Irish Research Council is the handling agency in Ireland for HERA under which the funding was made available. The HERA ‘Uses of the Past’ project will support 18 project leaders; 62 principal investigators; 106 postdoctoral fellows; 30 PhD students and 76 associated partners for three years (2016-2019). Each of the 18 projects will involve researchers from four or more participating countries.
Commenting on the funding announcement, Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Chair of the Irish Research Council said: “We are delighted to be able to provide funding for Professor Bradley to participate in the ‘Uses of the Past’ project.
The Irish Research Council is committed to the growth of collaborative humanities research across Europe and programmes such as these are important in generating new theories and identifying challenges of the changing world that lie ahead, as well as cross and interdisciplinarity.”
