Google Ireland partners with Irish Research Council on Enterprise Partnership Scheme 2020: Call open
Posted: 11 November, 2020
The IRC’s Enterprise Partnership Scheme will benefit from a new postgraduate strand this year, supported by Google Ireland under a partnership with the Irish Research Council.
Google Ireland is supporting a PhD scholarship under the scheme to undertake doctoral research in online content safety. Through the partnership, Google Ireland is fostering the development of high quality research on an area which is of great importance to everyone who uses the internet. The strand provides an excellent opportunity for an early career researcher in any discipline to pursue a research project and develop a track record in this area. Google Ireland is fully funding one PhD under the current call.
The Google Ireland strand joins the Enterprise Partnership Scheme as it enters its seventeenth year. The scheme provides excellent opportunities for postgraduate or postdoctoral candidates, hosted by an eligible research performing institution, to collaborate with an enterprise or employer on a research project of mutual interest. The scheme promotes the development of research and innovation within an enterprise context, including social innovation, and promotes opportunities for diverse careers for research talent.
Speaking about the partnership, Ryan Meade, Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager with Google Ireland, stated: “We’re delighted to be partnering with the Irish Research Council to support exceptional and innovative research on the challenge of building a safer and more trusted internet. Our EMEA headquarters in Dublin has been a key centre for Google’s trust and safety work for more than 17 years, and we want to ensure we’re playing a part in nurturing cutting-edge academic work on these topics.”
Welcoming the new strand on this year’s EPS call, Peter Brown, Director of the Irish Research Council, commented: “the Council has a long history of supporting early career researchers across all disciplines, and the Enterprise Partnership Scheme is a keystone of this ongoing mission. We are excited about the Google-funded scholarship as it provides an opportunity for an early career researcher to influence the future of tech in the important area of online content safety. Responding to enterprise challenges through research and innovation, and through supporting the development of skilled talent, is what the EPS is all about and we are delighted to welcome Google as a partner in 2020.”
